West Cork Peaks Challenge

West Cork Cycling Club is delighted to announce the launch of the West Cork Peaks Challenge, our vision of what a sportive should be like.
A sportive that takes on the stunning Borlin Valley, the hidden Mealagh Valley, and the iconic Priest’s Leap. So mark your diary for Saturday August 26, 2017. There will be a tough 160 km challenge, and a more relaxed 90 km route, both starting in Dunmanway in the heart of West Cork.
Saturday August 26 2017. Sign on from 0800 h. Rolling out at 0900 h from Dunmanway Rugby Club. All riders will roll out together.
Sign-on will be at Dunmanway Rugby Club, on the R599, 1 km southeast of Dunmanway town. There will be a neutralised roll out at 0900 h from the Rugby Club through Dunmanway Square. Click here for the rugby club location.
Ample parking will be available at Dunmanway Rugby Club.
Regardless of route option, registration for the West Cork Peaks Challenge is €30 for Cycling Ireland members. Non-members of CI are required to pay an additional €5 to cover insurance.
Most of the registration fee will go to Coaction West Cork which provides care and support services for West Cork children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Both routes will be signposted all the way. In addition, a lead car will travel ahead of the participants on each route, and a broom wagon will follow. Marshalls will be stationed at busier junctions. An ambulance and medical team will be on standby, contact details for which will be provided prior to rollout.
Refreshments will be provided at:
Ballingeary (47 km): Main food stop for 160 and 90 km routes.
Kenmare (102 km): Second food stop for 160 km route.
Dunmanway Rugby Club finish: Tea, coffee, food, etc. BYOB!
Water will be provided at a number of additional points along the routes.
Showers are available at the finish at Dunmanway Rugby Club.
A note on weather
The West Cork Peaks Challenge is a stunning route which crosses the Shehy Mountains. The weather can be unpredictable. Riders are advised to check the weather forecast before setting out, including http://www.yr.no. A rain jacket is advisable. Breezes can be cold.
